Coach’s Guide to Helping Gymnasts Through Mental Blocks

The Regulation → Trust → Repetition™ Model is a practical, step-by-step guide designed for gymnastics coaches supporting athletes through mental blocks and return from injury.

When a gymnast hesitates, balks, or suddenly can’t perform a skill they’ve done before, it’s not a lack of effort—it’s a nervous system response.

And pushing harder often makes it worse.

This guide gives you a clear framework for what to do instead.

Inside, you’ll learn how to:

  • Support gymnasts returning from injury without increasing fear or re-injury risk

  • Recognize when a mental block is driven by the nervous system—not skill loss

  • Use coaching language that reduces pressure and builds trust

  • Apply the Confidence Ladder (70% Rule + 2 Balk Rule) to safely rebuild skills

  • Progress athletes in a way that restores both confidence and consistency

This model bridges the gap between physical readiness and psychological readiness—so you’re not just sending athletes back, you’re truly preparing them.

Because being “cleared” doesn’t mean they feel safe.

And when gymnasts feel safe again—
they perform with confidence.
